THE REALITY OF CANADA
The best safeguard of a commonwealth is justice to the individual. The Canadian Creed tells us how Canada is closest to the ideal. The real patriot is one who, in seeing what ought to be, uses his best endeavours to achieve that ideal. Of the millions who have been attracted and influenced to come to Canada, few have been disappointed. There are few sentiments more honourable and more appreciated than love of one's country. While we need to be vigilant about whom we permit to enter into and settle in Canada and who want to become Canadians, an exclusion policy regarding immigration based on racism is unacceptable to others as well as to Canada. Canada is, and will, by example, do more to foster and spread democratic principles throughout the world than coercion, threats and war will ever do. The Canadian Creed will lead and will continue to lead the way in whatever is needed to foster goodwill among people.
Freedom of choice is essential to our way of life. Our character, our dedication to whatever is the truth, our compassion for the plight of people in many parts of the world are reflected in many pronouncements in the Canadian Creed. The Canadian Creed sets forth what Canada is, and strives to be, at its best.
